Just as Champagne can only be from Champagne, now appellations and designations of origin will shape the future of cannabis. In late September 2020, California’s Governor Newsom signed into law SB 67, a bill ensuring that cannabis and cannabis products produced in a specific growing region can be recognized by their “appellation of origin” as defined by the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The bill also authorizes the CDFA to establish a “city of origin” designation. Just as with wine, an appellations designation is valuable knowledge for the consumer. It gives the power to choose where and how their cannabis was grown and in turn rewarding both the customer and the producer with the elevated experience that has transformed wine from a commodity to a regional treasure.#CannabisAppellations
