In celebration and anticipation of International Women’s Day on March 8th, we wanted to shine a light on some of the women in cannabis who inspire us most. These powerful and bold female leaders and pioneers are some of the most ambitious entrepreneurs we know.
For our first installment, we connected with Andrea Brooks, founder and CEO of Sava. Andrea and her partners Amanda Denz (co-founder and CMO) and Meaghan Zore, Esq (co-founder, COO, and General Counsel) have created a highly-curated, personalized discovery platform that brings California’s finest cannabis to consumers’ doorsteps.
What drew you to work with this magical cannabis plant?
A personal need. I was in pain, and cannabis brought me back to health. During my healing journey, I realized there was a serious gap in the market – we needed a trusted source that curated California’s best products and brought them right to your door, one with a focus on quality, education, and transparency into sourcing. That’s how Sava was born.
How do you and your company hope to impact and/or inspire women?
Our women-founded company makes it a priority to support other women-run businesses. We take concrete actions like committing that half of the brands we carry on the platform be women-founded and participating in mentorship and speaking opportunities geared towards women in the industry.
What has been the most difficult and the most rewarding thing about building your business?
Over the last five years, this industry has gone through a lot of changes, including constant shifts in regulations that require us to change how we operate. We’ve made it through a very tumultuous transition from the medical market to the recreational market, and now that the dust is settling we’re excited to grow!
Cannabis so far is a local industry, born from a global movement. How can leaders across geographies work together to bring other women into the industry?
Mentorship. Choosing to invest in women-founded businesses. Choosing to partner with women-run companies.
What is one bit of wisdom or advice you have for other women looking to lead in this space?
Create a support network of other women whom you can lean on and turn to for advice. We are much stronger together!
